Minutes of the 30th Meeting of the 65th Year

At 10:15 AM, President Giordmaine called the 76 attendees to order for the 30th meeting of the 65th year of the Old Guard. John Marks led the invocation.

The minutes of our last meeting were read by G.P. Mellick Belshaw

A number of visitors were present:
Bob Thompson introduced his wife Betty and their friend
            Scott McVay introduced Margery Ward
            Charles Stenard introduced Betsy Loughran
Warren Leback introduced his wife, Jewell
Cyril Franks introduced his wife, Violet

A moment of silence was observed in memory of Charles Kornforth, who passed away on April 15th.
Joe Bolster, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, submitted the list of nominees for Old Guard positions as officers and program chairs. The nominees were accepted unanimously.

The day’s program, titled “Charles Stenard and Friends,” was introduced by Bob Thompson. He told us that Charley Stenard began playing the cello at age 12, and continued through his years at Syracuse University, playing both solo and with chamber groups. Recently, Charley has resumed his musical studies with cellist Betsy Loughran, and participates in recitals and chamber music workshops.

Charley then took the podium to introduced and describe his fellow musicians in appropriately glowing terms. They include two Old Guard members, Harriet Chase, piano, and Joan Fleming, violin. The fourth member of the group was Mary Ann Walker. The program began with a Chopin work played by Charley and Harriet.

Here, limitations of the written and spoken word become painfully obvious, as I cannot reproduce the extraordinarily pleasurable music that followed. I briefly considered humming or singing a few bars, but I didn’t want to be the first Old Guard recorder of minutes to be booed off the podium.

For their second selection, our players gave a rendition of a recently discovered piano sonata, by Debussy. As their third and major presentation, the quartet played Dvorak’s seldom-heard, Five Bagatelles.

In the Old Guard tradition, several penetrating and well-articulated questions followed; the meeting adjourned at 11:15 AM.

Respectfully submitted,
James Deneen
